The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the employment status, job security, housing and food security, transportation and access to resources of California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) students. We surveyed CSUF students during the summer 2020. We found that 57% of CSUF students were insecure in at least one basic need: 31% of all students were food insecure; 8% were homeless, and 50% were housing insecure. Compared to before the pandemic, the prevalence of food insecurity has doubled. We also found that students who were Black, Hispanic, Middle-Eastern/North African, first-generation, and who had young children were more likely to be insecure in a basic need. The report includes recommendations for policymakers, university leaders, and researchers.
